Explore Jack’s

Trails

Jack’s Point has around 25km of walking and biking trails that extend around the edge of Lake Whakatipu, weaving through the golf course and valley.

Most trails start near, or lead to, the Jack’s Point Clubhouse.

Rated easy to hard, there’s a trail for everyone – including your four-legged friends. Dogs are allowed on all trails, provided they are on a lead. See our detailed description of trails below.

Parks

Our beautiful council owned playground features a flying fox and a large tunnel as well other innovative playground equipment. Set under the stunning back drop of the Remarkable Mountain range and adjoining the sports fields and the tennis courts, this area offers fun for all the family.

A sports oval provides first class cricket in the summer, converting to a rugby and soccer field in the winter. Like all facilities at Jack's Point these are open to the public to enjoy.

JACK’S POINT LOOP

Hard – 2.5 Hours Loop

The ultimate uphill slog

This one’s a real thigh-burner. Start at the Clubhouse, go past the tennis courts and turn right at the small car park. The start of the track is signposted. Start with the steep, grassy climb to an elevation of 474 metres, then take in the views across the lake. There’s short, rocky downhill sections, sweeping corners and a few more uphill sections as well as narrow sections (watch out for other trail users!). Lots of fun on a mountain bike once the initial climb is out of the way.

This trail can be linked to the Lakeside Trail and shares a section along the golf course with the Preserve Loop.

LAKESIDE TRAIL

Medium – 2.5 hours One Way

Runs along the lakeside to Kelvin Heights

This trail leads to Kelvin Heights, so be sure to organise a ride back home, or leave enough time to walk the trail back to Jack’s Point. Start at the Clubhouse, following the lower section of the Jack’s Point Loop to the lakeside, where you’ll head North. There’s tight corners and steep pitches on this track, ranking it at Grade 3 for mountain bikers. Watch out for other trail users as this beautiful lakeside track is popular, particularly on a sunny day. The trail goes over undulating grasslands, through scattered scrub with unrelenting vistas of the mountains and Lake Whakatipu.

At the Jardine Park/Kelvin Heights end, the track links to Kelvin Peninsula Walkway to Kawarau Bridge and you could, if you’re really, really keen, keep going all the way to central Queenstown via the Frankton Track.

PRESERVE LOOP

Medium – 1.5 Hours Loop

Views of the golf course and the Preserve

With steep sections and grassy pathways, this track will get the blood pumping but is less strenuous than the Jack’s Point Loop. Start at the Clubhouse and follow the Jack’s Point Loop track to the small carpark, turning off at the first trail bollard. This trail crosses fields which sometimes house livestock, so make sure you close all gates behind you to avoid brining home woolly, four-legged friends. The track starts with some steep sections and views of the golf course, before turning off along the edge of the Preserve. It then links up with the Lake Tewa Loop for an easy warm-down back to the Clubhouse.

REMARKABLES LOOP

Easy – 2 Hours Loop

Around the houses

This easy loop track makes for a great after-dinner stroll. Starting from the entrance to Jack’s Point, you can head west along Highland North, walk through The Terraces and towards the tennis courts before walking along the far boundary of Highlands South towards the Jack’s Point road boundary, and back to the entrance. Of course, you can start and finish this loop anywhere. Offering a dramatic view of the Remarkables, don’t forget to look up, and listen out for the excited shouts of skydivers above you.

This gentle-grade track should be suitable for pushchairs in good weather.

LAKE TEWA LOOP

Very Easy – 25 Minutes Loop

The perfect afternoon stroll for all

This short loop track with an easy gradient is the perfect afternoon stroll for anyone. Looping around Lake Tewa in front of the Clubhouse, it’s mostly flat and suitable for youngsters. It’s best to start by heading west from the Clubhouse, towards the golf course and along the track shared with the end of the Preserve Loop. There’s a great little lookout point along this section, but do keep an eye out for birdlife along the entire track – this is a great loop to do with curious, nature-loving children. This loop is temporarily closed at the north end due to construction activity, but will eventually connect through the Village.
